This report presents an analysis of crime in Texas during 1980, based on data submitted to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Bureau by Texas sheriffs and chiefs of police.
Abstract
It reviews the history of the UCR Program and its procedures in the State. The crime analysis looks at Index crimes overall for the year and at the specific crimes of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Information on arrests in the State and on police personnel is included. During 1980, 844,257 Index offenses were reported by law enforcement agencies in Texas. Violent offenses made up 8.9 percent of the crime index total, rising 11 percent over the crimes reported in 1979. The number of property crimes represented 91 percent of the total index, and these crimes increased 6.5 percent over 1979 figures. Law enforcers cleared by arrest or exceptional clearance 21 percent of all Index offenses reported to them in 1980. The total value of property stolen during the year was over $750 million.
