This report analyzes crime trends from 1950 to 1985 in Sweden in two categories: crimes reported to police and persons suspected or charged with committing a crime.
Abstract
Overall, crime has increased about 500 percent between 1950 and 1985. The year 1965 seemed to mark the beginning of an increase in the average rate of crime, possibly due to a change in the method of recording crime as well as a new method for statistical calculation. The statistics also show that crime is seasonal, with more crimes committed during summer and fall months, particularly from August to October. Many crimes committed during these months are crimes of opportunity and may be related to residences' being left empty while owners are on vacation. Crime is also concentrated in urban areas: the highest rates are in Stockholm, Goteborg, and Malm. The study provides further details on crime trends by crime categories, presents a comparison of crime rates in Sweden with other Scandinavian cantons, and discusses persons in the court system.
