THIS REPORT PRESENTS AN ANALYSIS OF CRIME VICTIMIZATION IN ST. LOUIS BASED ON A SURVEY OF APPROXIMATELY 12,000 HOUSING UNITS AND 2,000 COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS LOCATED IN THE CITY DURING 1972.
Abstract
THE REPORT EXAMINES THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY UNDER THREE MAJOR HEADINGS: PERSONAL VICTIMIZATION (IN WHICH THE VICTIM WAS PRESENT AND AWARE OF THE CRIME WHILE IN PROGRESS), HOUSEHOLD VICTIMIZATIONS (CRIMES OF THEFT OR ATTEMPTED THEFT WHICH INVOLVED NO FACE-TO-FACE CONTACT BETWEEN THE VICTIM (S) AND OFFENDER (S) ), AND COMMERCIAL VICTIMIZATIONS (IN WHICH THERE WAS A THEFT OF PROPERTY BELONGING TO A COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENT). CRIMES ARE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO BOTH THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING SYSTEM (UCR) CRIME CLASSIFICATIONS, AND THE NATIONAL CRIME PANEL (NCP) CRIME CLASSIFICATIONS. ISSUES EXAMINED IN THE SURVEY INCLUDE THE EXTENT TO WHICH CRIMES WERE REPORTED TO POLICE, LOSSES AND INJURIES SUFFERED BY VICTIMS, THE EXTENT TO WHICH OFFENDERS WERE KNOWN BY VICTIMS (OR WERE STRANGERS), AND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VARIOUS SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF VICTIMS AND OFFENDERS. COPIES OF THE QUESTIONNAIRES EMPLOYED IN THE SURVEY ARE APPENDED TO THE REPORT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
