This report outlines the relationship between crime victims and the criminal justice system and outlines a framework for victim service providers and victim advocates for developing positive relations with corrections officials and gaining access to the decisionmaking process within prison systems.
Abstract
The report discusses current corrections involvement in victim services and describes how the "victims need to know" affects various stages of the correctional process including reception and evaluation, community programs, transfers, sentence reduction and early release eligibility, victim-witness notification, complaints, and parole. Guidelines for establishing a positive relationship between victim service workers and correctional personnel are provided. Fifteen recommendations by the American Correctional Association Task Force on Victims of Crime Final Report are included; these recommendations focus on victim services, offender accountability, and correctional staff victimization. 5 appendixes
