To best represent an organization, crime victims advocates must have a good working relationship with the media.
Abstract
The relationship between media and victims' rights organizations is a 2-way street where both groups need to understand each other's goals and objectives. The media should have an understanding of victims' issues so coverage will be fair and sensitive, and the organization should learn how media functions to develop strategies for public outreach programs. Inappropriate reporting such as failing to get all of the facts and revealing graphic descriptions of a victim can cause emotional trauma for victims and survivors. This guide examines the complex issues of sexual assault coverage including consideration for an individual's privacy and reasons for reporting a victim's name. Recommendations to ensure good communication between victim advocacy organizations and journalists include implementation of a one-day media conference with co-sponsors and participants from various professions. Comprehensive guidelines are enclosed. 6 appendixes
