This 1998 Uniform Crime Report for West Virginia provides data on the number of various types of offenses known to police, arrests, civilian law enforcement employees, and law enforcement officers killed and assaulted.
Abstract
The total number of offenses in 1998 known to police was 45,979, with 4,457 of these offenses being violent crimes (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and felonious assault), and 41,522 being nonviolent offenses (breaking and entering, larceny theft, and motor vehicle theft). The Index Crime rate per 100,000 residents was 2,538.9. The total Index Crime clearance rate was 18.7 percent; for violent crimes it was 43.6 percent, and for nonviolent crimes it was 15.3 percent. The total number of Index Crime arrests was 8,704, with 1,695 being for violent crimes and 7,009 being for nonviolent crimes. The value of property stolen was $47,734,358, and the value of property recovered was $14,066,710. One law enforcement officer was killed, and 438 were assaulted. There were 324 arson offenses that caused $4,608,290 in damage. A total of 3,022 sworn law enforcement officers were employed and 980 civilians. Data on domestic violence encompass the relationship between offender and victim and the month and day-of-the-week when the offense occurred. Other data cover hate crime, purchased or confiscated controlled substances and their estimated street value, and confiscated controlled substances (comparison). Extensive tables and charts
