Abstract
Highlights of crime in Wisconsin for the year 2010 include the following: between 2009 and 2010, overall crime rates in the State decreased, with both the violent crime rate and property crime rate decreasing by 4 percent; aggravated assault accounted for 59 percent of violent crimes, while theft accounted for 75 percent of property crimes reported to law enforcement; both the number of persons murdered in the State and the number of forcible rapes reported to law enforcement increased by 7 percent in 2010; the following types of crime all saw decreased during 2010 - robberies (8 percent), aggravated assaults (2 percent), burglary (1 percent), theft (4 percent), and motor vehicle theft (9 percent); and in 2010, the number of arson cases reported to law enforcement increased by 23 percent. This report was compiled by the Wisconsin Statistical Analysis Center and provides crime data reported by law enforcement agencies within the State. Data were collected from 319 law enforcement agencies that participate in the Summary-Based Reporting system and 80 agencies that participate in the Incident-Based Reporting system. The report presents detailed information on crime volume, rates, and trends for eight major criminal offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
