Using the latest research findings and case studies, this book analyzes crimes against women -- rape, family violence, household burglary, and fraud -- and presents a collateral discussion of the sexual abuse of children.
Abstract
The discussion of rape addresses types of rape, a profile of rape in America, reasons men rape, the rape of elderly women, and trends in law. The examination of family violence focuses on wife abuse, child battering, and elderly abuse, and the burglary discussion encompasses a profile of burglary in America, unlawful entry without force, a burglar profile, burglary tools, property usually taken, and the potential for violence. The emotional impact of such crimes is studied along with the physical characteristics of high-crime and low-crime neighborhoods and the importance of neighborhood organizations and informal citizen action. A special section on child protection focuses on the prevention of sexual assault. The discussion is also applicable to other forms of child physical abuse. Fraud and con games are covered extensively, with examples including the pigeon drop, the bank examiner con, the missing heir fraud, the obituary scheme, investment and land fraud, home improvements and auto repairs, and self-improvement schemes. Aspects of civil litigation by crime victims are discussed in the concluding chapter. Chapter bibliographies and subject index.
