THIS PAPER EXAMINES THE INFLUENCE ON ROBBERY RATES OF THE AVERAGE REAL GAINS FROM ROBBERY, THE PROBABILITY OF ARREST, AND THE PROBABILITY OF CONVICTION IF ARRESTED, USING DATA FROM UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS.
Abstract
THE RESULTS SUGGEST THE POSSIBILITY THAT DECREASES IN THE AVERAGE REAL TAKE FROM ROBBERY IN RECENT YEARS MAY HAVE ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE RAPID INCREASE IN THE ROBBERY RATE DURING THIS PERIOD. RESULTS ALSO INDICATE THAT THE CONTINUED DECLINES IN THE PROBABILITY OF ARREST AND CONVICTION HAVE APPARENTLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE RISE IN THE NUMBER OF REPORTED ROBBERIES. WHILE GAINS HAVE BEEN FALLING, THE PROBABILISTIC COSTS TO ROBBERS HAVE ALSO BEEN FALLING, BY LARGE PROPORTIONS. ROBBERY THUS REMAINS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
