THIS DOCUMENT EXAMINES THE FUNCTIONS OF CORRECTIONS AS PART OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND EXPLORES THE ROLE OF CANADIAN CORRECTIONS IN PRE-SENTENCING PROCEDURES AND IN REDUCTION OF RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
THE MAJOR TRENDS IN THE FIELD OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN CANADA ARE OUTLINED IN THE FIRST CHAPTER, WHICH INCLUDES SELECTED STATISTICS ON THE POST OF ADMINISTERING JUSTICE, CRIME RATES, POLICE CLEARANCE RATES, SENTENCING RESULTS, AND NUMBERS OF OFFENDERS. STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING INDIVIDUALS FROM ENTERING INTO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AND RESTRICTING THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM THROUGH DIVERSION ARE THEN DISCUSSED. CORRECTIONAL ACTIVITIES INTENDED TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM ARE REVIEWED. THESE INCLUDE PROVISION OF THE NECESSARY CONTROL AND SUPERVISION OF OFFENDERS, INSURING PRISONERS' RIGHTS, PROMOTING THE REINTEGRATION OF OFFENDERS INTO SOCIETY, PROVIDING SUITABLE TREATMENT AND CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS, AND IMPROVING CORRECTIONAL MANAGEMENT. SEVERAL IDEAS FOR ADVANCING AND IMPROVING THE CANADIAN CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED. --IN FRENCH AND ENGLISH
