TEXTBOOK DESIGNED TO PROVIDE LAW STUDENTS, MAGISTRATES, AND LAWYERS WITH A PRACTICAL EXPLANATION OF THE WORKING OF THE BRITISH CRIMINAL COURTS.
Abstract
TO PRESENT AN OVERALL VIEW OF THE SYSTEM, A FICTIONAL CASE IS FIRST FOLLOWED FROM ARREST TO SENTENCING. THE AUTHOR THEN GIVES A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF BRITISH CRIMINAL PROCEDURE, REFERRING BACK TO THE CASE TO ILLUSTRATE THE RULES DESCRIBED. A DISCUSSION OF THE SENTENCING PROCESS CONSIDERS WHEN IN LAW A COURT CAN IMPOSE A PARTICULAR PUNISHMENT AND WHAT THAT PUNISHMENT INVOLVES TO THE OFFENDER. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS THE TEXT OF THE SIX CRIMINAL STATUTES WHICH REGULATE THE BRITISH JUDICIAL AND SENTENCING PROCESS. A LIST OF CASES REFERRED TO THROUGHOUT THE TEXTBOOK IS ALSO INCLUDED.
