Abstract
The book first presents a typical criminal case by taking the reader through all the relevant documentation and transcripts of the committal proceedings and trial. The next section of the book details the rules of criminal procedure as viewed from the perspective of the advocate in court. Issues covered in this section pertain to legal parameters in criminal investigations, police procedures after arrest, magistrates' courts jurisdiction, committal proceedings, trial at the crown court, trial before magistrates, appeals from magistrates' courts, appeal from the crown court, bail, and costs and legal aid. The final section focuses on sentencing procedures, with attention to the sentencing process, imprisonment, noncustodial sentences, juvenile dispositions, and the sentencing of mentally ill offenders.
