A substantial literature portrays criminal defense attorneys as enjoying poor ethics, sordid working conditions, or low public and professional esteem.
Abstract
Despite this literature, a very substantial majority of the attorneys surveyed in this sample did not desire to change careers. This response and the accompanying optional comments do not indicate a demoralized sample but instead show a group evidencing considerable satisfaction with their professional careers. This satisfaction runs across the entire range of the professional group without regard to the number of years an individual practiced law or status as a private practitioner, public defender, or mixed public/private category.
