THIS STUDY EXPLORED SOME OF THE QUANTITATIVE ASPECTS OF FENCING IN MIAMI IN ORDER TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE DYNAMICS OF THIS CRIME AND TO DEVISE STRATEGIES FOR REDUCING ITS INCIDENCE AND EFFECTS.
Abstract
THIS REPORT DOCUMENTS THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY OF FENCING IN MIAMI. AN OVERVIEW OF THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF FENCING IN FLORIDA IS FIRST PROVIDED. THE NATURE AND STRUCTURE OF THE FENCING SYSTEM IS EXAMINED, AND A MODEL OF THE SYSTEM SHOWING THE FLOW OF GOODS IN DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE CRIME. THE REPORT THEN PRESENTS DATA SUGGESTING GREATER PREVALENCE OF THE CRIME THAN IS BELIEVED BY MOST PEOPLE. FINALLY, EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED WHICH INDICATES THAT ARREST OF FENCES MAY BE A SIGNIFICANT DETERRENT TO BURGLARY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
