Abstract
The historical review covers the beginnings of criminal investigations, the role of police patrol officers, the modern police patrol officer's duties and responsibilities, and types of criminal investigations. Current investigative practices are detailed that pertain to team policing, case screening, investigative functions (preliminary, follow-up and special subject investigations), crime analysis, specialized investigative units, and the relationship between criminal investigation and the news media. Subsequent text chapters discuss legal issues in criminal investigations, sources of information, interview and interrogation, informants, report writing, surveillance and undercover operations, analytical investigations, crime scene investigation, and crime laboratories. Additional chapters address sex offenses, violent crimes, assault, robbery, burglary, larceny, accident investigations, drug offenses, special investigations, the police-prosecutor relationship, and investigative trends.
