LITERATURE ON THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE INVESTIGATIVE FUNCTION, SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL ADVANCES IN THE FIELD, INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES, AND THE SOCIOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OF INVESTIGATION IS REVIEWED.
Abstract
THE REVIEW REVEALS THAT RESEARCH INTO THE INVESTIGATIVE FUNCTION DOES NOT HAVE A LONG HISTORY. THE EARLIEST OF THE MAJOR STUDIES WAS REPORTED IN 1971. MANY OF THE MORE RECENT STUDIES APPROACH THE DETECTIVE FUNCTION AS A MANAGERIAL OR ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEM. THE OVERRIDING CONCERN IN SUCH STUDIES HAS BEEN AN ASSESSMENT OF HOW DETECTIVE OPERATIONS ARE AND SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT. FEW STUDIES HAVE BEEN CONCERNED WITH THE SOCIAL ROLE OF THE DETECTIVE. THE MOST VALUABLE OF THE SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO STUDYING THE ROLE OF THE DETECTIVE. THE MOST VALUABLE OF THE SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO STUDYING THE ROLE OF THE DETECTIVE HAVE FOCUSED ON SPECIALIZED UNITS (VICE SQUAD OPERATIONS, GAMBLING). A 15-PAGE BIBLIOGRALPHY ACCOMPANIES THE REVIEW. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED -- LKM)
