Seventeen chapters provide flexible and practical standards for the uniformed officer and the followup investigator. Standards established in the report 'The Police' by the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals are incorporated into the text.
Abstract
Within the framework of the report, the book provides practical policies and procedures for the criminal investigation function, as well as the proper investigative techniques. The book addresses not only the fundamentals of criminal investigation but also the attitudinal prerequisites necessary for the professional investigator. Modern techniques and procedures are viewed indepth and step-by-step, from the preliminary investigation stage through prosecution. Investigative techniques discussed include undercover operations, documentation, the polygraph, hypnosis, and interviews and interrogations. Sources of information, both internal and external, as well as the use of the computer in the investigative function are considered along with the issues of privacy. Other chapters look at physical evidence and laboratory procedures, homicide investigation standards, and standards for the investigation of rape, sexual assault, and child abuse. Robbery and burglary, theft and related crimes, and standards for vehicle theft investigation and for narcotics and vice control are discussed. Additional chapters consider the intelligence-gathering process in terms of organized crime and public disorder; standards for the utilization of informants; arson, bombing, and hostage negotiation; preparation of court cases; and the role of the investigator in team policing. Chapter references, notes, and appendixes; figures; and an index are supplied.
