This volume presents 57 articles originally published in magazines, newspapers, and journals between 1979 and 1987 and focusing on five broad areas: crime and justice in the United States, victimology, law enforcement, the judicial process. juvenile justice, and corrections.
Abstract
Ten selections examine the overall structure of the criminal justice system and the current nature and extent of crime. Six articles discuss the impact of crime on the victim. Eleven selections examine the role of the police officer, with emphasis on police stress, minority representation, international law enforcement, police education, and defendants' rights. Nine selections discuss the process by which the accused are moved through the judicial system, focusing on prosecutors, courts, the jury process, and judicial ethics. Ten selections on juvenile justice consider effective ways to respond to violent juvenile crime, juvenile justice consider effective ways to respond to violent juvenile crime, juvenile detention, and alternatives to juvenile courts. Eleven selections focus on the current status of the penal system and the effects of sentencing, probation, overcrowding, and private correctional institutions on the rehabilitation of criminals.
