This report describes the activities, programs, and finances of the Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) of Queensland, Australia during the 1996-97 fiscal year; the CJC is responsible for monitoring, reviewing, coordinating, and initiating reform of the administration of criminal justice in Queensland.
Abstract
The CJC's five operational divisions are the Official Misconduct Division, the Research and Coordination Division, the Intelligence Division, the Witness Protection Division, and the Corruption Prevention. The Corporate Services Division and the Office of General Counsel support these divisions. During the 1996-97 fiscal year, the CJC released nine publications on policing issues, conducted two surveys on police recruits' perceptions of their training, coordinated a review of the police recruitment and selection process, and released three publications on criminal justice issues. It also made 523 recommendations for criminal or disciplinary action related to police and public sector misconduct, gave 50 workshops on ethical decision-making for all levels of police, and entered 1,193 new intelligence documents in its criminal intelligence database. It also provided support and protection to 190 persons in 72 operations and conducted 152 relocations in the witness protection program.
