THE HISTROICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION IS TRACED, AND CURRENT TRENDS ARE VIEWED. VARIOUS MODELS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION ARE ALSO PROPOSED.
Abstract
THE ACADEMIC WORLD'S ATTITUTES TOWARD CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION ARE INDICATED, AND THE GOALS OF THE NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATIONAL CONSORTIUM ARE DELINEATED. FEDERAL FUNDING OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION, MANDATORY EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE AND OTHER CRIMINAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD ARE AMONG THE TRENDS EXAMINED. VARIOUS APPROACHES TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION ARE LABELED AND DESCRIBED AS SOCIOLOGICAL ORIENTATION, PSYCHOLOGICAL ORIENTATION, POLITICAL SCIENCE ORIENTATION, SCIENCE ORIENTATION, AND LEGALISTIC ORIENTATION. A SYSTEMS MODEL FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION, WHICH EMPHASIZES THAT CRIMINAL JUSTICE IS A SINGLE SYSTEM OF INTERRELATED AND INTERDEPENDENT PARTS, IS EXPLORED. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY MODEL OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE IS VIEWED AS THE MOST POPULAR MODEL. THIS MODEL EMPHASIZES A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION BASED IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES TO DEVELOP A DISCRIMINATING PROFESSIONAL WHO CAN DEAL WITH INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP BEHAVIOR IN THE CONTEXT OF ACHIEVING WORK GOALS. A THIRD SYSTEM DISCUSSED COMBINES THE SYSTEMS MODEL AND THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY MODEL. IT IS BUILT UPON A SOLID FOUNDATION IN LIBERAL ARTS, WITH A MAJOR FIELD THAT REQUIRES A COMMON CORE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE COURSES, A SELECTED INTERDISCIPLINARY CORE, AND A MODEST NUMBER OF ELECTIVES DEALING WITH VARIOUS PHASES OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
