FOURTEEN STATES FROM THE WESTERN UNITED STATES CONVENED TO DISCUSS THE NEED FOR GREATER INTERACTION AMONG AND BETWEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT, CORRECTIONS, AND ADJUDICATION PERSONNEL ON THE JOB AND IN THE CLASSROOM.
Abstract
PROBLEMS INHERENT IN DEFINING CRIMINAL JUSTICE BOUNDARIES FOR STUDY ARE EXAMINED, WITH RESPECT TO THE SOCIAL, THEORETICAL, AND ADJUDICATORY ASPECTS OF CRIME. A SYSTEMIC PERSPECTIVE FOR THE STUDY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE IS OUTLINED. DISCUSSION FOCUSES ON THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE POLICE, COURTS, AND CORRECTIONS IN TERMS OF EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND CURRICULUM, THE NEED FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, AND INTEGRATION OF LEGAL, CRIMINOLOGICAL, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSPECTIVES. CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE NEED FOR PUBLIC SERVICE INVOLVEMENT OF STUDENTS, FOR TRANSLATING THEORY INTO PRACTICE, AND FOR HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING. FINALLY, REGIONAL STRATEGIES ARE EXPLORED AS STRATEGIES THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE WESTERN UNITED STATES, GIVEN THAT AREA'S ISOLATED AND HIGHLY MIXED ETHNICAL CHARACTER. NOTES ARE PROVIDED, AND APPENDIXES FURNISH NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF THE 43 PARTICIPANTS, THE CONFERENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE, SPECIAL CONTRIBUTORS, AND STAFF.
