Abstract
THE VOLUME OPENS WITH A DISCUSSION OF CRIMINOLOGY, THE CAUSES OF CRIME, AND THE UNIVERSE OF CRIMINALS. THE EMPHASIS IN THIS DISCUSSION IS UPON BOTH THE VICTIM AND THE OFFENDER AS PERSONS AND THE INTERACTIONS THAT OFTEN LEAP TO CRIME. THE TEXT THEN EXAMINES THE SPECIFIC ELEMENTS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED ARE THE HISTORY AND OPERATIONS OF THE POLICE, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL, TRIAL PROCEDURES, PLEA NEGOTIATIONS, AND THE ISSUE OF PRETRIAL PUBLICITY. ALSO EXAMINED ARE THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, ISSUES IN PUNISHMENT AND REHABILITATION, SENTENCING, PRISONERS' RIGHTS, ORGANIZED CRIME, AND CAREERS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE. THIS TEXT IS A REVISION OF AN EARLIER PUBLICATION, 'LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE: AN INTRODUCTION'. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
