This volume presents the instructor's guide, participant's guide, and text designed for use in the criminal justice analysis course sponsored by LEAA and taught at the Criminal Justice Training and Technical Assistance Resource Centers located at five universities.
Abstract
The course is designed for planners, budget analysts, program coordinators, policy analysts, program developers, and program monitors. It consists of an orientation, an introduction, seven instructional modules, and two optional instructional units. It aims to develop understanding of the purpose and logic of analysis as used to formulate criminal justice system problems which are used to influence decisionmaking. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to choose and apply analytic techniques to crime and system data. Specific topics covered include problem specification, data synthesis, and descriptive, comparative, and inferential methods of data interpretation. Six major exercises to be completed by participants are also included. The instructor's manual includes a detailed content outline, directions for scheduling, materials and instructions for course exercises, handouts, and visual aids. The bibliography in each manual lists about 180 references. The text provides materials that complement and support the analysis course and that can be used as a reference by criminal justice students and professionals. The material is organized to parallel the sequence in the course modules; it uses the hypothetical community of Chaos City to provide examples.
