This instructor's guide is designed for use in the criminal justice analysis course sponsored by LEAA and taught at the Criminal Justice Training and Technical Assistance Resource Centers located at five universities.
Abstract
The course consists of an orientation, an introduction, seven instructional modules, and two optional instructional units. It aims to develop understanding of the purpose and logic of analysis as used to formulate crime and criminal justice system problems which are used to influence decisionmaking. Emphasis is on problem formulation as distinct from strategy assessment. Upon completion of the course, participants should perceive data analysis as being within their competencies. Specific topics covered include problem specification, data synthesis, and descriptive, comparative, and inferential methods of data interpretation. Six major exercises to be completed by participants are also included. The course is intended for planners, budget analysts, program coordinators, policy analysts, program developers, and program monitors. The instructor's manual includes a detailed content outline, directions for scheduling, materials and instructions for course exercises, handouts, and visual aids. A bibliography lists about 180 references. For the participant's guide and course text, see NCJ 79357-58.
