SYNOPSIS OF INDIVIDUAL STANDARDS, BOTH APPROVED AND TENTATIVE, PREPARED BY ADVISORY COMMITTEES OF THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION.
Abstract
THE STANDARDS ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE GUIDELINES ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINISTRATION AND SUBSTANTIVE LAW. THEY WERE FORMULATED TO FILL THE INCREASING NEED FOR A UNIFORM CRIMINAL PROCEDURE APPLICABLE TO BOTH FEDERAL AND STATE JURISDICTIONS. THE STANDARDS ARE NOT MANDATORY PRONOUNCEMENTS - RATHER THEY ARE SUGGESTED POLICY GUIDELINES WHICH LEAVE OPTIONS TO THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT WHEREVER POSSIBLE. THE PROJECT HAS COVERED THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, INCLUDING THE FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, BY PROSECUTORS AND BY DEFENSE COUNSEL, AND THE PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED IN THE PRE-TRIAL, TRIAL, SENTENCING, AND REVIEW STAGES.
