TECHNICAL PAPERS ARE PRESENTED FROM A CONFERENCE THAT WAS HELD TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXCHANGE OF METHODS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE DATA COLLECTION, ANALYSIS, AND THE PRESENTATION OF SUCH DATA.
Abstract
PAPERS RELATING TO BOTH INTERNATIONAL AND TO U.S. SPECIFIC STUDIES RANGE FROM A LOOK AT THE BENEFITS OF INTERNATIONAL CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE STATISTICS AS SEEN IN A UNITED NATIONS STUDY OF CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES TO A WASHINGTON STATE STUDY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF JUVENILES REFERRED TO THE COURT FOR CRIMINAL ACTS AND THE IMPACT OF DISPOSITION STANDARDS ON JUVENILE FACILITY NEEDS, AND OF AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF THE NEW YORK JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM IN ITS PROCESSING OF JUVENILE 'DESIGNATED FELONY' OFFENDERS. MODEL ANALYSIS AND STUDIES INCLUDE ANALYSIS OF THE USEFULNESS OF A MODEL THAT INDICATES THE IMPACT OF CRIME CONTROL ACTIVITIES ON REPORTED CRIME, A STUDY OF THE DISTRIBUTIVE EFFECTS OF JUROR SELECTION UNDER TWO GENERAL SELECTION PROCEDURES, AND AN ANALYSIS OF TIME SENTENCED FOR A SAMPLE OF NORTH CAROLINA OFFENDERS AS A MEASURE OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF RECIDIVIST CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. POLICY AND PLANNING DISCUSSIONS FOCUS ON GUIDELINES FOR USING RESEARCH RESULTS TO IMPACT CRIMINAL JUSTICE POLICY DECISIONS, THE NEED AND METHODS FOR COMPILING NATIONWIDE COURT STATISTICS, AND AN ECONOMIC MARKET MODEL FOR DETERMINING THE DETERRENT EFFECT OF A PROGRAM TO COUNTER CIGARETTE SMUGGLING. FURTHER STUDIES AND MODELS PRESENTED CONCERN THE EFFECT OF MEASUREMENT ERROR IN REPORTED CRIME ON ESTIMATIONS OF THE IMPACT OF POLICE ACTIVITY ON CRIME LEVELS, AN ECONOMIC MODEL OF THE DEMAND FOR POLICE PERSONNEL, AN EVALUATION OF A WITNESS SERVICES PROGRAM, AN ILLINOIS RECIDIVISM STUDY, AND A STUDY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACTIVITIES THAT DETER RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES. ALSO INCLUDED ARE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PRODUCTS DISPLAYED AT THE CONFERENCE AND A LIST OF THE PERSONS ATTENDING. (RCB)
