PAPERS ARE PRESENTED FROM CONFERENCE TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXCHANGE OF METHODS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE DATA COLLECTION, ANALYSIS, AND EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION.
Abstract
THE PUBLICATIONS AND REPORTS PRESENTED PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PARTICULAR STATISTICAL, RESEARCH, AND INFORMATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENTS OCCURRING IN THE VARIOUS STATES REPRESENTED. THE PAPERS DISCUSS PROBABILISTIC MODELS AND POLICE DEPLOYMENT, ECONOMIC CORRELATES OF FEMALE CRIMINALITY, THE IMPACT OF ERRORS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF DETERRENCE, SOME TESTS OF ALTERNATIVE MODELS FOR FORECASTING REPORTED CRIME DATA, AND CRIME SLOPE AND INTERCEPT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CRIME RATE AS A MEASURE OF CRIME. THEY ALSO EXAMINE MODELS OF POLICE EXPENDITURE, EXPONENTIAL GROWTH IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND ITS IMPACT ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE DECISIONMAKING, AND CHANGE AND CONTINUITY IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH. THE NEGLECT OF DATA IN THE MAKING OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE POLICY DECISIONS IS BROUGHT UP AS ARE LABOR MARKET DETERMINENTS OF MALE CRIME RATES. RESEARCH AND EVALUATION METHODS AND THE UNRELIABILITY IN AGGRAVATED ASSAULT STATISTICS ARE DISCUSSED. THE USE OF FELONY INVESTIGATION DECISION MODELS FOR ALLOCATING INVESTIGATIVE TIME AND THE BUILDING OF A SIMULATION MODEL TO ASSESS COSTS OF ALTERNATE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES IN CORRECTIONS ARE SUGGESTED, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE MODELS. ISSUES IN LOW-COST INFORMATION USE IN LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES, PROPOSALS FOR CHANGE IN CRIME CONTROL STRATEGY, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRISON POPULATION AND PRISON CAPACITIES ARE COVERED. DESCRIPTIONS ARE PROVIDED OF THE PRODUCTS DISPLAYED AT THE CONFERENCE, AND PERSONS ATTENDING ARE LISTED. (RCB)
