THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION ON LAW AND JUSTICE (CELJ) PROJECT HELPS INFORM COMMUNITY GROUPS ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AS IT OPERATES IN THEIR COMMUNITY AND WORKS TO IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF CITIZENS' RIGHTS.
Abstract
TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, CELJ HELPS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT ILLINOIS PLAN AND ORGANIZE CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDY GROUPS FOR ADULTS. THIS STUDY MANUAL IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE FUNCTIONS, RULES, LAWS, AND ORGANIZATION OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. MATERIAL IS ORGANIZED INTO THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, THE ILLINOIS COURT SYSTEM, STEPS IN CRIMINAL PROCEDURE, VICTIMS AND WITNESSES, JUVENILE JUSTICE, CORRECTIONS, CRIME AND CRIMINAL ACTS, IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION, THE FEDERAL SYSTEM, CITIZENS' RIGHTS, AND A GLOSSARY OF TERMS. THE VARIOUS SECTIONS ARE PRINTED IN DIFFERENT COLORS SO THAT THEY MAY BE LOCATED MORE EASILY. WITHIN EACH GENERAL HEADING ARE A SERIES OF ONE-PAGE SHEETS DESCRIBING IN BRIEF NARRATIVE FORM PARTICULAR ELEMENTS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. AT THE ENDS OF THE SECTIONS ARE READING LISTS, ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF CHARTS, MAPS, AND DIAGRAMS....ELW
