This document describes the criminal justice system in England and Wales as of the end of 1994.
Abstract
Individual sections present demographic data; describe the historical development of criminal law and procedures; and provide an overview of the criminal justice system, including the government, criminal justice committees, the police service, the special constabulary, the courts, the probation service, the prison service, and the crown prosecution service. Further sections detail criminal procedures, including crime detection, charges, detention, offense categories, proceedings in magistrates' courts, trial by jury, juvenile proceedings, sentencing, appeals, and early release. Victim services; crime prevention efforts; the Royal Commission on Criminal Justice; and current statistical trends in crimes, offenders, sentencing, and inmate populations are also described. Table, figures, list of related publications, and 32 references
