THIS TEACHING GUIDE FOR A HIGH SCHOOL LAW COURSE CONTAINS TESTS, STUDY QUESTIONS, AND OVERVIEWS CRIMINAL JUSTICE, LAW ENFORCEMENT, COURTS, AND OTHER ELEMENTS.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM FOR WHICH THIS TEACHING GUIDE WAS WRITTEN, 'LIVING LAW,' AIMS TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE REALITIES OF THE U.S. LEGAL SYSTEM, LAW, AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, AND TO DEVELOP REASONING SKILLS. A STUDENT TEXT 'LIVING LAW--CRIMINAL JUSTICE,' SHOULD BE USED WITH THE TEACHING GUIDE; THE TEACHING GUIDE IS ORGANIZED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STUDENT TEXT. WITHIN EACH TEACHING GUIDE CHAPTER ARE PROVIDED A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEAS IN THE CORRESPONDING STUDENT-TEXT UNIT, THE UNIT'S OBJECTIVES, WAYS TO PRESENT THE MATERIAL, SUGGESTIONS FOR CLASS ACTIVITIES, CHAPTER TESTS, AND STUDY QUESTIONS. IN ADDITION, SUGGESTIONS ARE GIVEN ABOUT GUEST SPEAKERS, FIELD TRIPS, AND PEER TEACHING. DISCUSSIONS ON CRIME AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM USING A CASE OF TWO YOUNG OFFENDERS INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE SYSTEM. DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN POLICE FORCES, VARIOUS CONSTITUTIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT ISSUES, AND COMMON PROBLEMS BETWEEN POLICE AND CITIZENS ARE DISCUSSED. A SECTION ON THE COURTS COVERS LAWYERS AND PROSECUTION, TRIALS, AND JUVENILE JUSTICE, WHILE A FINAL CORRECTIONS SECTION EXAMINES PROBATION, PAROLE, AND PRISON LIFE. CHARTS AND TABLES ARE INCLUDED. SEE NCJ 65600 FOR ACCOMPANYING TEXT. (PAP)
