Abstract
PART ONE OF THE BOOKLET INCLUDES A COMPARISON OF CRIME IN TENNESSEE TO CRIME IN THE NATION AND THE SOUTHEAST REGION OF THE NATION (SECTION A). THIS IS FOLLOWED BY COMPARISONS OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY IN EACH OF THE STATE'S 14 LAW ENFORCEMENT DATA REGIONS (SECTION B). THE READER IS PROVIDED WITH MORE SPECIFIC INFORMATION IN THE LAST PORTION OF B, WHICH CONTAINS TABLES OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY BY REGION AND BY COUNTY. PART TWO IS DEVOTED TO A DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT STATUS OF THE TENNESSEE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. PRECEDING THE SECTION IS A GENERAL NARRATIVE OF AN OFFENDER'S PATH THROUGH THE SYSTEM, FROM ARREST TO DISCHARGE. SECTIONS A, B, AND C OF PART TWO DEAL WITH SELECTED ASPECTS OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT, JUDICIAL AND CORRECTIONAL POWER AVAILABLE TO COMBAT CRIME IN THE STATE. FINALLY, THE TENNESSEE LAW ENFORCEMENT PLANNING COMMISSION IS COVERED IN PART THREE. ITS FUNCTIONS AND FUNDING PROCESS ARE DESCRIBED, FOLLOWED BY A SELECTED LIST OF PROGRAMS FUNDED BY THE COMMISSION.
