Recommendations for criminal justice training in Virginia cover academy funding and administration, mandated training, specialized training and facilities, field training, instructors, and higher education.
Abstract
Final recommendations were approved by the Training Advisory Committee on February 7, 1985. Recommendations advocate academy accreditation and certification, alternative funding methods for academies, the State's assumption of all costs for mandated training, a reexamination of the regional academy configuration, and new officers' completion of the academy before assuming duties. The committee also recommends development of a statewide competency examination, mandated training at all functional levels, an expansion of standards for court security officers and jailors, and the consolidation of training into a single statewide facility. The construction of a statewide driver training facility, the use of field training officers with all new officers during the first year of employment, and a certification process for field training officers are also recommended. Remaining recommendations< support the reimbursement of instructors or departments for teaching, educational incentive programs, financial assistance for educational expenses, and incentive pay for academic achievement.
