This drug treatment planning chart illustrates major decision points in the criminal justice system where coordinated drug abuse treatment interventions can be applied.
Abstract
An understanding of the case flow process from arrest to release is essential for coordination and linkage between criminal justice and drug treatment systems. Further, an understanding of key drug treatment components is equally important in the development of comprehensive drug abuse treatment plans within the criminal justice system. Some State and local jurisdictions may not use all features suggested in the chart, whereas others may use more decision points and options for treating offenders with addictive disorders. State and local drug treatment systems are encouraged to work together with criminal justice professionals when adapting and using the chart as a planning and coordinating tool in their own drug abuse treatment services. The chart specifically covers arrest, pretrial hearings, treatment risk and needs assessment, infectious disease assessment, presentence hearings, trial and sentencing, corrections and imprisonment, parole, drug testing, and intermediate sanctions. A glossary of terms associated with drug treatment in the criminal justice system is included.
