THE OUTLINE AND MATERIALS FOR AN ADVANCED HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES CLASS TAUGHT IN WISCONSIN ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE APPROACH TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS ISSUE-ORIENTED. EXTENSIVE USE IS MADE OF OUTSIDE RESOURCE PEOPLE. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO FOLLOW RELEVANT NEWSPAPER STORIES AND TO CONSIDER WHETHER THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WORKS. UNITS COVER LAW (4 WEEKS), CRIME AND LAW ENFORCEMENT (5 1/2 WEEKS), COURTS (2 1/2 WEEKS), CORRECTIONS (4 1/2 WEEKS), AND CAPITAL PUNISHMENT (1 1/2 WEEKS). RECOMMENDED OUTSIDE PROJECTS ARE NEWSPAPER REPORTS, RESEARCH PAPERS AND BOOK REPORTS ON LEGAL TOPICS, AND FIELD EXPERIENCE (E.G., A COURT VISIT). DETAILED LESSON PLANS AND OUTLINES OF DISCUSSION TOPICS AND POINTS TO BE EMPHASIZED ARE PROVIDED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE A LIST OF RESOURCES (BOOKS, GAMES, AND AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS) AND APPENDIXES WITH A PRETEST OF LEGAL TERMS, A LIST OF TERMS TO DEFINE AT HOME, HANDOUTS ON LAW RELEVANT TO YOUNGSTERS' INTERESTS AND ON THE JUVENILE CODE, EXERCISES IN INTERPRETING CRIMINAL STATUTES, COPIES OF EXAMINATIONS, A GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE WISCONSIN COURT SYSTEM, TEXTS OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ARTICLES ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. --IN ENGLISH.
