This volume discusses and summarizes cases and United States Supreme Court decisions related to criminal procedure, including constitutional issues related to criminal procedure, warrant requirements, field interviews, arrest and booking, and vehicle searches.
Abstract
Additional topics include observations of evidence not covered by reasonable expectations of privacy, eavesdropping and wiretapping, expectations of privacy related to border control and closed containers, the privilege against self-incrimination, and identification procedures. Further topics include the right to counsel, other issues related to criminal trials, issues related to the First Amendment, the exclusionary rule, and the Civil Rights Act. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the current law on the topic and continues with summaries of landmark Supreme Court cases, cases covering issues often encountered by law enforcement, lesser-known cases or those dealing with more subtle issues. The chapters conclude with hypothetical factual situations and associated questions for discussion. The text aims to help students develop both knowledge of established law and analytical skills needed for addressing volatile situations in the field.
