This text and accompanying study guide cover law and practice related to criminal procedures, specifically focusing on the court system, search and seizure, pretrial and trial procedures, and constitutional rights.
Abstract
Beginning chapters of the text concern the court system and constitutional rights, the criminal justice process, probable cause and reasonable suspicion, the exclusionary rule, search and seizure, stop and frisk, and arrests. Subsequent chapters cover vehicle stops, plain view, open fields, abandonment, electronic surveillance, identification, confessions and admissions, line-ups and other pretrial identification procedures, police misconduct, civil lawsuits against the police, and rights of the accused. The text has several features that should help students understand criminal law and retain legal concepts: frequent use of examples and illustrations, chapter outline at the beginning of each chapter, tables and figures, key concept summaries, sample police forms, legal term definitions, list of cases discussed by chapter, and case briefs. Appendixes contain a guide to case briefing, the case of Minnesota v. Dickerson, suggestions on how to be an effective witness, and the U.S. Constitution.
