Instruction in criminal procedure is provided for small metropolitan and rural police departments in Arkansas.
Abstract
This instruction was produced by the University of Arkansas School of Law under a grant from the Law Enforcement Assistance Act. An officer can use this material to solve daily problems and to help preserve the basic rights of defendants. The material was prepared in consultation with Arkansas police and court officials; Arkansas case law and statutes are provided throughout. The material can also be supplemented with local references. Topics covered are pretrial publicity, preservation of demonstrative evidence, entrapment, the law of arrest, stop and frisk, the Miranda warnings, search warrants, search of vehicles, search and seizure, lineup procedures, police report writing, bail procedure, and the laws of evidence. The manual does not claim to cover all areas of criminal procedure that should be considered in an adequate police training program. Local court rules and departmental regulations must be supplied locally, and officers specializing in certain areas of investigation or law enforcement, such as wiretapping, electronic surveillance, and riot control, will need training in criminal procedures applicable to those areas. Footnotes are provided.
