This report presents statistics on criminal proceedings in courts in Scotland during 1993.
Abstract
The number of persons involved in court proceedings declined by 7 percent from 1992 to a total of 183,600, continuing a trend toward increasing use of non-court disposals. Seventy-two percent of all persons with a charge proved received a fine as their main penalty, compared with 81 percent in 1983. The number of community service orders remained at around 3 percent, while the combined total of probation and community service orders increased. The use of custodial sentences increased from 8 percent in 1992 to 9 percent in 1993. The peak age of offending was 18, and 10 percent of 18-year-old males had a charge proved for a crime, simple assault, or breach of the peace during 1993, compared to 1 percent of the females of the same age. The police recorded 543,000 crimes, of which 186,000 were cleared up, as well as 442,000 offenses, of which 419,000 were cleared. Figures, tables, and appended methodological information
