Abstract
ANY STUDY OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR MUST INCLUDE A DISCUSSION OF THE MECHANISMS AND MOTIVATIONS OF DEVIANCE ALONG WITH THE SANCTIONS PRESCRIBED BY SOCIETY TO CONTROL SUCH ACTIVITY. THIS COLLECTION OF READINGS IS THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF THREE VOLUMES DEALING WITH A PARTICULAR TYPE OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR, THAT WHICH IS CRIMINAL IN NATURE. VOLUME 1 COVERS THE SOCIAL SETTING IN WHICH THE CRIMINAL FINDS HIMSELF. IT CONSIDERS THE NATURE OF DEVIANCE IN GENERAL, CRIME BEING ONE ASPECT, AND THEN ATTEMPTS TO DETERMINE THE PROPER ROLE OF CRIMINAL LAW IN CONTROLLING THIS ABERRANT ACTIVITY. AN ASSESSMENT IS MADE OF THE EXTENT OF THE CRIME PROBLEM ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF SOCIAL CONDITIONS THAT MAY BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS, SPECIAL CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO JUVENILE DELINQUENCY. THIS STUDY USES INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY CRIMINOLOGISTS AND SOCIOLOGISTS AND REPORTS FROM GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, COMMITTEES, AND COMMISSIONS, IT WILL BE OF SERVICE TO INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS AT LAW SCHOOLS, POLICE ACADEMIES, AND CORRECTIONAL TRAINING CENTERS. VOLUMES 2 AND 3 OF THE SERIES ANALYZE THE ENFORCEMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND THE SYSTEM EMPLOYED TO CORRECT THE CRIMINAL SO AS TO PREVENT FURTHER UNDESIRABLE BEHAVIOR. (SNI ABSTRACT)
