A review of the crime trend in Cyprus over the 1976- 1990 period presents statistical data on offense characteristics, juvenile delinquency and adult criminality, court proceedings, length of imprisonment, and recidivism with an emphasis on the situation in 1990.
Abstract
In 1990, 3,684 "true" cases of serious offenses were reported to the police, a crime level 0.2 percent higher than 1989. An increase in offenses against public order and property accounted for most of this slight increase. Offenses against property continue to form the largest group (74.3 percent) of serious offenses. Women represented only 8.7 percent of the adult offenders. Foreigners accounted for 23.8 percent of total convictions for serious offenses. The number of juveniles involved in the commission of both serious and minor offenses totaled 220, compared to 222 in 1989. The number of male juveniles decreased to 201 from 217 in 1989; the number of female juveniles increased to 19 from 5. In 1990, 832 males and 69 females were proceeded against for serious offenses; 577 men and 55 women were convicted. 120 tables and 1 appendix
