This annual report presents criminal statistics for 1978 and covers both crimes, which are contraventions of the Scottish Common Law, and offenses, which are mainly contraventions against statutory law.
Abstract
The total number of crimes and offenses recorded by the police in 1978 was nearly 644,000, almost 900 less than in 1977. About 80 percent of the crimes involved housebreaking or theft; motor vehicle offenses and minor breaches of the peace made up nearly two-thirds of all offenses. The report presents data on crimes and offenses recorded by the police in Scotland and shows trends, crimes and offenses cleared up, serious crimes against the person, property offenses, and other types of offenses. Separate chapters are devoted to homicide, crimes and offenses involving firearms, crimes and offenses involving children only, breathalyzing, court proceedings, and appeals. About 30 tables and two appendixes detailing the classification of crimes and listing the courts in Scotland are included.
