This book discusses criminal victimization in countries in transition.
Abstract
The book reports the results of the International Crime Victim Survey (ICVS), which was carried out in 1989, 1992-94 and 1996-97 in almost 60 countries, and asked more than 130,000 people about their experience with conventional crime, law enforcement, victim assistance, crime prevention and attitudes towards punishment. The book examines several key issues, including two of particular importance: corruption in public administration, and the relationship between citizens and the police. Both are discussed within the framework of confidence building in the process of democratization. In addition, it discusses: (1) comparing countries in transition; (2) methodology of the ICVS; (3) an overview of the victimization experience; (4) corruption in public administration and consumer fraud; and (5) appraisal of security and criminal justice. It includes a list of selected key publications on the ICVS. Notes, tables, references, figures
