Abstract
INCLUDED ARE BOTH EVENTS REPORTED TO THE POLICE AND THOSE THAT WERE NOT. IT SUCCEEDS CRIMINAL VICTIMIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES, 1976 (NCJ-34732), PUBLISHED IN JANUARY 1977. THE 100 STATISTICAL TABLES, COVERING INFORMATION ON VICTIMS, OFFENDERS, CRIME CHARACTERISTICS, AND OTHER TOPICS, ARE BASED ON A REPRESENTATIVE SURVEY OF SOME 135,000 PERSONS AND 15,000 BUSINESSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. RESPONDENTS WERE INTERVIEWED TWICE DURING THE COURSE OF THE DATA COLLECTION PERIOD, AT SIX-MONTH INTERVALS, CONCERNING THE FOLLOWING CRIMES - FOR INDIVIDUALS; RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, AND PERSONAL LARCENY; FOR HOUSEHOLDS: BURGLARY, HOUSEHOLD LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT; FOR COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS: BURGLARY AND ROBBERY. SELECTED FINDINGS ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN A SPECIAL SECTION. INFORMATION CONCERNING VICTIM SELF-PROTECTION, A TOPIC NOT COVERED IN THE 1973 REPORT, IS PRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME. METHODOLOGICAL APPENDIXES AND A SERIES OF TECHNICAL NOTES ARE APPENDED AS AIDS TO THE INTERPRETATION OF SURVEY RESULTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (SNI ABSTRACT)---ELW
