RE-EVALUATION OF THE 1937 BOOK, 'THE PROFESSIONAL THIEF', SHOWING THAT THE AUTHOR DID NOT ADEQUATELY RESEARCH THE TWO ISSUES OF SOCIAL ORIGIN AND DRUG RELIANCE.
Abstract
THE ARTICLE EXPLORES THE PERSONAL AND INTELLECTUAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JONES (THIEF) AND SUTHERLAND (AUTHOR). THE PRESENT AUTHOR STATES THAT SUTHERLAND 'WAS ONE CRIMINOLOGIST WHO WAS AT LEAST INTIMATELY ACQUAINTED WITH A CRIMINAL. ONE MAY THEN GO ON TO QUESTION, HOWEVER, HOW MUCH THIS HELPED HIS THEORY'. THE AUTHOR REFUTES SUTHERLAND'S THEORIES THAT PROFESSIONAL THEFT IS AN ORGANIZATION AND A PROFESSION AND THAT THE PROFESSIONAL THIEF HAS MIDDLE- OR UPPER-CLASS ORIGINS.
