OVERVIEW OF THE THEORIES, CONCEPTS, METHODS, AND AREAS OF INVESTIGATION WHICH CONSTITUTE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH AS OF 1973, FOCUSING ON RESEARCH DONE IN WEST GERMANY.
Abstract
THIS TEXTBOOK EMPHASIZES THE INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF MODERN CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE OFFENDER AND ALL ASPECTS OF HIS SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT. IT FIRST REVIEWS MAJOR THEORETICAL ORIENTATIONS AND FUNDEMENTAL METHODOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES WHICH HAVE SHAPED EMPIRICAL RESEARCH. IT THEN REVIEWS THE TYPES OF APPROACHES THAT HAVE BEEN TAKEN IN SPECIFIC AREAS, GIVING SAMPLE DATA PRINCIPALLY FROM PROJECTS BY WEST GERMAN RESEARCHERS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THESE AREAS INCLUDE VICTIMOLOGY, DRUG USE, PSYCHOLOGICAL ABNORMALITIES, FAMILY STRUCTURE, SOCIALIZATION PROCESSES, AND PREDICTING FUTURE BEHAVIOR. STUDIES OF THE OFFENDER IN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM EXAMINE PRISONS, PROBATION, EXPERIMENTAL INSTITUTIONS, SHORT-TERM INCARCERATION, JUVENILE CORRECTIONS, AND RESOCIALIZATION PROGRAMS. ALSO REVIEWED IS RESEARCH AIMED AT PARTICULAR TYPES OF OFFENDERS AND OFFENSES. STATISTICS AND OTHER INFORMATION ON CRIMINALITY IN WEST GERMANY APPEAR THROUGHOUT THE TEXT. AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS ALSO INCLUDED. --IN GERMAN
