The 1991 annual report of Australia's Criminology Research Council details research projects funded and completed during the year.
Abstract
Since 1972 when the Council became operational, it has made grants for 204 separate research projects totaling about $2.6 million. The Council approved 10 projects in 1991 that focus on drunk driving rehabilitation, reform of summary jurisdiction in Victoria and magistrate reactions to change, social and economic correlates of reported family violence, attitudes toward and practice of euthanasia in South Australia, the development of statistical models for adult offender populations, problems of aboriginal youth who criminally offend, program evaluation at the Barwon Prison, the Hindley Street Youth Project, gender and sentencing in Victoria's magistrate courts, and corporate law sanctions and the control of white collar crime. Projects awarded additional funding during the year are concerned with job design, social supports, and occupational stress associated with prison officers; regulatory response to industrial fatalities; alcohol-related offenses and the drinking environment; and gender and sentencing in Victoria's magistrate courts. Completed research projects examined occupational health and safety legislation, services for crime victims, alleged violence reporting at St. Vincent Hospital's emergency center, homicide victims, prison environment indicators, spouse assault victims, crime seriousness, sentencing law, futures market regulation, violence against aboriginal women, tax law compliance, and delinquency. Financial data on Council operations are provided. Appendixes list research in progress and previously completed projects.
