This manual is designed to help schools develop a crisis management plan for preventing juvenile violence; the Crisis Alert System Implementation (CASI) approach combines years of the author's research and experience in dealing with crisis situations.
Abstract
The CASI manual guides the reader through a step-by-step crisis management process. The first two chapters of the manual concern the need for crisis management by focusing on real-life scenarios and crises that have occurred throughout the United States. The third chapter concentrates on a 10-step developmental process for crisis management planning and also includes a section on how to deal with the media. The fourth chapter contains an actual crisis management plan, and the author indicates each school must tailor its crisis management plan to address geographic location, size, number of administrative personnel, and individual characteristics. The fifth chapter includes information on how to deal with the aftermath of a crisis, as well as sample letters and forms for use by parents and school officials. The sixth chapter presents exercises to assist in crisis management plan development. An appendix includes a crisis management needs analysis, toll-free numbers for health information, topics for training and additional information, a glossary of terms, and a list of recommended readings. 13 references
