SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF URINALYSIS TECHNOLOGY AND EFFECTS ON DRUG TREATMENT RECIPIENTS.
Abstract
THE STUDY INVESTIGATES THE TECHNOLOGICAL (CHEMICAL URINALYSIS) AND HUMAN (COUNSELING) ASPECTS OF DRUG TREATMENT. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE CONTROVERSY BETWEEN THE STRUCTURALISTS-WHO USED URINE TESTS TO PROVIDE ADDICTS MORE CONSTRAINTS AND PUNISHMENTS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND GROWTH- AND THE HUMANISTIC EXISTENTIALISTS-WHO THROUGH COUNSELING IN GROUPS WANTED TO FREE THE ADDICT WHO WAS VIEWED AS A VICTIM EXPERIENCING THE PLAY OF MANIPULATING FORCES. THE STRUCTURALISTS WON BUT ACCOMMODATIONS WERE MADE, AND THE PROGRAM GAINED THE FAITH OF THOSE INVOLVED AT EXODUS HOUSE.
