THE DISCIPLINE OF CRISIS INTERVENTION AND TECHNIQUES FOR SUCCESSFUL CRISIS MANAGEMENT ARE EXAMINED IN THIS HANDBOOK, WITH EMPHASIS ON IMMEDIATE RESPONSE AND INTERVENTION RATHER THAN SHORT-TERM COUNSELING.
Abstract
CRISIS INTERVENTION IS DEFINED AS THE IMMEDIATE ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH PROBLEMS IN ORDER TO RESTORE THE VICTIM TO PRECRISIS LEVELS OF FUNCTIONING. INTERVENERS MUST BE AWARE OF THREE MAJOR ELEMENTS PRESENT: (1) THE STRESSFUL SITUATION ITSELF, (2) THE RESPONSE MADE TO THAT SITUATION BY THE PERSON IN CRISIS, AND (3) METHODS OF RESOLVING THE CRISIS AND PROBLEMS INVOLVED. FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR (I.E., EXPECTATIONS AND NEEDS, SOCIETAL DEFINITIONS, HEREDITY) ARE BRIEFLY EXAMINED. PROCEDURES FOR EFFECTIVE INTERVENTION EMPHASIZE THE IMMEDIACY OF THE INTERVENTION, CONTROL OF THE CRISIS, ASSESSMENT OF THE SITUATION, RESOLUTION OF THE CRISIS, AND FOLLOWUP. THE VICTIMS' FEELINGS AND INTERVENTION STRATEGIES ARE ILLUMINATED IN DISCUSSIONS OF SUICIDE, MARRIAGE AND FAMILY CRISES, AND RAPE. GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFETY AND SURVIVAL OF CRISIS INTERVENERS EMPHASIZE THEIR EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL NEEDS (2 SUCH AS IDENTIFYING FOODS THAT CAUSE STRESS). PROPER REFERRALS FOR VICTIMS INCLUDE GUIDELINES FOR ESTABLISHING A REFERRAL NETWORK AND FOR MAKING HELPFUL REFERRALS. PROCEDURES FOR DEVELOPING AN IN-SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. A BOOKLET OF STANDARDS ON CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION AND EMERGENCY CARDIAC CARE IS APPENDED. SOME CHARTS AND RELATED DATA ARE INCLUDED. (WJR)
