CONCEPTS OF CRISIS INTERVENTION AND THEIR APPLICATION TO CORRECTIONAL PRACTICE FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ITSELF BEING THE CRISIS PRODUCING EVENT IN THE LIFE OF THE OFFENDER.
Abstract
EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THOSE POINTS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS WHICH ARE MORE LIKELY TO PRODUCE A STATE OF CRISIS. AMONG THESE ARE THE ARREST AND INITIAL DETENTION, THE PRESENTENCE PHASE, THE POINT OF ACTUAL OR THREATENED REVOCATION OF PROBATION AND PAROLE. THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT ALTHOUGH CRISIS THEORY HAS GROWN OUT OF OTHER FORMS OF PRACTICE SETTINGS, IT IS OF PARTICULAR RELEVANCE TO CORRECTIONS. SHE ALSO SUGGESTS THAT PROBATION AND PAROLE OFFICERS MAY HAVE ALREADY EVOLVED THEIR OWN PRACTICE MODELS ON THE BASIS OF DIRECT EXPERIENCE WHICH CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRISIS THEORY AND OTHER SHORT - TERM TREATMENT SYSTEMS.
